Telling your story to others

We work really hard to get your stories heard. Not only is it really important to spread messages about awareness of symptoms, but it raises the profile of the cause, and most people find it a very positive experience.

We do need you to get involved – Jemima Peacock from Southampton (who will appear in Love It!) tells her story

Jemima, 22, was diagnosed with a borderline ovarian cyst when she was just 16 that turned out to be cancerous. Jemima experienced bloating, needing to go to the toilet more often, irregular and prolonged periods. It was her mother who insisted she see her GP. Jemima is now a final year medical student, "having a scare so young has made me more aware of my body and what can go wrong…I believe that the profile of ovarian cancer needs to be raised".

If you would like to share your story with the press, please contact Jill on 0208 238 7615, jill@ovarian.org.uk

Donating professional time and expertise

Professional fees can be hugely expensive, and one of the ways we are able to keep costs down, and spend on research high, is through the help of professionals. We are always keen to hear from people who might be able to assist us with legal advice, pr, design or medical or nursing expertise. Please contact either Annwen Jones, Chief Executive - ajones@ovarian.org.uk or Frances Reid, Head of Communications - frances@ovarian.org.uk.

Become an ambassador for the charity

This could mean a range of things

  • Undertaking a programme of awareness raising events

  • Getting others involved

  • Spreading awareness of the charity and its work

For example

  • Sir Digby Jones, Chairman of the CBI has worked hard to involve leading female business directors in our work

  • Lawyer and government advisor Professor Richard Susskind asks for donations to the charity in lieu of after dinner or conference speaking fees, and is encouraging others to do likewise. He also ensures our name and details are included at such events

Distribute awareness leaflets

Can you persuade your local surgery or pharmacy to take some leaflets and a poster for the month of March, or even better throughout the year? Perhaps you work in a large organisation that has an occupational health team? We're happy to supply posters and leaflets wherever they could be used, so please contact us asap to avoid disappointment!

Volunteering in our Elstree office

We are a really small team with a huge workload! Any offers of help with keeping our database up to date, or dealing with demands during peak times (eg March awareness month, or sending out the newsletter) would be greatly appreciated. Give us a call on 020 8238 7605 in the first instance.
